Good morning and happy Sunday. I happened to be watching Manhunt, a show about the search for John Wilkes Booth after he assassinated President Lincoln, yesterday when my friend texted me about Trump. The assassination attempt on former President Trump taught me two things: that Trump is going to win this fall, and this is going to be a violent election season. This week, we’ll be diving into political safety and outlining the white nationalist roots of political violence. More below.

There’s a lot of other important news that likely won’t make the headlines this week, so I hope you have a chance to read what’s linked here. In addition, we have three learning opportunities available this month.

If you have any questions you’d like us to unpack in our weekly study hall (sent to our daily subscribers on Fridays) reply to this email (or any email) to submit. We’ve moved away from our submissions form because we were getting too much anonymous hate.

Thank you for making this work possible. This newsletter is fully funded by our readers. Here's how you can help us stay sustainable:

A picture can say a thousand words, but this one screams one: President. At least, that’s how many will interpret this photo of former President Donald Trump’s response to surviving an assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday. Trump was shot in the ear. The Secret Service killed the shooter. In addition, one rally attendee died and two others were critically injured. It’s a hell of a moment for the candidate to portray indomitable strength – a timely foil against Biden, who’s been struggling to redeem himself in the media’s eye after a lackluster presidential debate.

This assassination attempt will quickly be blamed on the left, a group that’s been leading a “witch hunt” against the president since the 2018 election to hold him accountable for his various crimes and hatemongering. We can expect this to further polarize each party. But beyond that, this upcoming election is rooted in social ideology, not politics. And for those who feel that their white, cishet, American identity is under attack, Trump signifies what it looks like to survive the threat of assassination.

One more thing: this political violence is very scary. The last election resulted in an insurrection at the Capitol. It’s only July, and there’s already been an assassination attempt on Trump. Brace yourselves: this is going to be a bloody election season. And when we normalize political violence on a presidential stage, we normalize it in our schools, workplaces, and neighborhoods. It sets a dangerous precedent for how power is displayed, wielded and challenged.
